Dutch Design Week 2019: ‘Workplace’ best in show

Dutch Design Week 2019

'Workplace’ best in show

With an altogether different vibe to UK events such as Clerkenwell Design Week and the London Design Festival, Dutch Design Week takes on a more innovative persona. The cool, younger European cousin of the A&D event world, if you will.

Opening its doors once again this week, the festival (running until 27 October) celebrates emerging creative designers seeking to make their mark on the commercial interiors world. And with the industry being so fiercely dedicated to ‘biomaterials’ this year, the event is already shaping up to be the most inspiring yet.

With so many installations and exhibits on offer, we’ve sifted through the programme to pick out the must-visit stands for workplace design ingenuity.

Aptum:
Customised lighting creations

Research has shown that office lighting can greatly affect employee happiness and wellbeing. Therefore, when it comes to workplace design, it is a crucial element of the interiors mix.

Choosing Dutch Design Week as its platform, Ontwerpduo – from design duo Tineke Beunders and Nathan Wierink – launches its new lighting brand: ‘Aptum’. Combining practicality with beauty, the fixtures are more akin to works of art. Adaptable by name – ‘Aptum’ is a literal translation – and by nature, the lights will work in all manner of workplace and hospitality settings.

WIKKELHOUSE:
MODULAR BUILDING CONCEPT MADE FROM CARDBOARD

From the artistic to the groundbreaking, Wikkelhouse transforms an everyday material into an imaginative solution for workplace, or even residential use. Comprising a 1.2 metre deep structure, cardboard is bonded with eco-friendly glue to create a versatile and adaptable building that’s as beautiful as it is practical.

Tying in perfectly to the ‘personal sanctuaries’ theme, Wikkelhouse can be placed anywhere without the need for foundations. So for anyone dreaming of a secluded forest-based work retreat, this could be the answer they’ve been seeking.

Studio Boing: The Office Jungle

The current trend for workplace reinvention has seen designers go to great lengths in order to transform rooms crammed with desks into engaging spaces. Studio Boing has taken this task to the extreme. The Office Jungle draws inspiration from the wild for its suspended geodesic structure, offering workers the opportunity to climb from their desks onto a wooden frame above.

Although left-field, it’s beautifully designed and certainly beats sitting in an overcrowded space.
